Inside Obamacare: The Fix For America’s Ailing Health Care System

Since President Obama signed it into law in 2010, the Affordable Care Act has been debated endlessly, its botched rollout sparking headlines and outrage nationwide. But very little of the conversation surrounding the ACA has focused on the health care trends that first inspired the law, as well as the early forays the Obamas made years ago in Chicago in making health care more affordable, accessible and accountable. Bruce Japsen’s Inside Obamacare is a concise guide to the overhaul of the American healthcare system. Filled with pithy insight from the author and candid information from practitioners and experts, the book explores the changes that have already taken place as well as the potential of Obamacare. Interestingly, although the book is pro-Obamacare, there is also some examination of the complications and reservations regarding the new system. I particularly liked the chapter that explained “evolving health roles” and the new responsibilities of pharmacists, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. Japsen not only touches on preconceived notions about the Affordable Care Act, but also tells the reader where we are now in the healthcare story. The information in the book is well-suited for the electronic format, and the download is perfect for the on-the-go reader.

I finally understand how transformative the Affordable Care Act really is and how the law can lead to improvements in transparency and accountability for my doctor or hospital but may lead to changes for me and my family. Japsen does a good job explaining the early efforts of Barack and Michelle Obama that I didn’t know and I’m sure most people don’t know while also looking at current and future efforts by employers and insurers to change your benefit packages. The chapter on “exchanges are the future for everybody” is elightening, potentially scary and a must-read.

I expected to learn more about the inner workings of ACA than were covered here. The report does offer good insights into our health care system.
